J and I decided to visit the complex pond today. I had saved up some old bread over winter to feed the fish once the weather started warming up.
It was the perfect day to feed the fish, so we brought out the bags of stale bread. Once we got to the water, though, we didn't just meet fish.
Two geese started honking at us and followed us around the edge of the pond. We didn't want them to bother us, so we threw some bread behind them and then headed toward the water. They liked what we gave them, though, and decided they would brave our company.
We stood by the side of the pond and fed the little fish - as well as a couple catfish, while the geese snatched what the fish didn't get right away. The geese swam around the fish, not minding them one bit. A couple times the birds swam so close to the edge of the water that they were within five feet of us. We were lucky, because these geese weren't mean as some of them can be.
We spent several minutes out there feeding the fish and the geese. There was also a little box turtle that kept trying to eat, but the geese kept bowling him over to get at the bread. Poor little guy! We threw a couple balled up pieces of bread that sank and he went after those pretty quickly.
Just as we were about finished feeding the fish a little girl and her dad came out of one of the other apartments. She was a tiny little thing, no more than two years old I think. We asked her if she'd like to help us feed the fish and she came over to us, took a piece of bread and threw it right at the edge of the water. I had to help get it out a little farther so the fish could get to it, but she was still excited.
I love spring out here.
