I made a comment to my husband today, one that I had meant to come out as positive and reassuring but ended up rather back-firing. While I tried to hide my shame in his embrace, he returned with, “I’ll just stand here and wait while you try to pass that foot. I’ll even hold your hand in the bathroom if it’ll take a while.” That made us both laugh, and I was soon reduced to tears by the comment and the image conjured in response. However, it made me think of all the other times I have stuck my foot in my mouth – or worse things. I told him that I can’t help it – “Some people are born with a silver spoon in their mouths. I, on the other hand, was graced with a foot.”
